About Dorothy Netherland

I am a mixed media artist based in North Charleston. My art practice is rooted in my exploration and expansion of materials, merging collage, paint, ink, screenprint, photo transfer, glass, mylar, plastic packaging, and other media and objects. I'm currently making sculptural pieces, as well as mixed-media pieces working underneath and on top of Mylar sheets. On the Mylar, I cut up and transfer layers of altered magazine imagery under and over the plastic, and combine the resulting colors, shapes and textures with hand painted and drawn imagery.

My media and content have shifted and expanded over time, but at its core my work has always been an expression of my efforts to understand the nature of what we think of as "true" or "real". I am obsessed with the commingling of the real and the fake, and I'm interested in the ways in which we respond to constant content.
