About Dorothy Netherland

Originally from Alexandria, VA, I am an artist based in North Charleston, SC. I create mixed-media artwork using diverse materials and processes, inviting viewers into layered, visually rich worlds of embedded meaning. What started in 2002 as painting on layers of glass gradually evolved into my current art practice engaged in the exploration and expansion of materials, merging collage, paint, ink, screenprint, photo transfer, glass, mylar, plastic packaging, and other materials. I'm currently making sculptural pieces, as well as pieces on plastic sheets. I cut up and transfer layers of altered magazine imagery under and over the plastic, and combine the resulting colors, shapes and textures with hand painted and drawn imagery.

My media and content have shifted and expanded over time, but at its core my work has always been an expression of my efforts to understand the nature of what we think of as "true" or "real". I am obsessed with the commingling of the real and the fake, and I'm interested in the ways in which we respond to constant content.
